As well as being a practical space, your nursery should have a calm, bright and inspiring atmosphere for your little one. Using paint is a fantastic way to create an engaging colour scheme that you can personalise with patterns, details and accessories.

Discover five ways you can use our certified child-safe Intelligent paints to create a safe and inspiring environment for your little one…

Embrace colour with bright accent shades

When designing a nursery space, don’t shy away from using bold colours all over. Colour will create an exciting space for children to explore and learn.

Darker, moodier shades such as Juniper Ash will provide a strong base where you can introduce brighter accent shades. Use primary colours like Tuscan Red, Carys and Grey Stone in a variety of block patterns to create an interactive and adventurous setting, perfect for a toddler’s playroom.

Reflect nature with a pink and green colour pairing

Upper Wall - Masquerade, Lower Wall - Pleat, Flower Detail - Shirting and Normandy Grey, Mini Kitchen: Burges Snail – Ocean

As well as having a homely feel, your nursery is a place to create connection with nature. Pink and green is a natural combination that works together effortlessly, reminiscent of the outdoors.

Use two muted shades like Masquerade and Pleat for a soft and soothing scheme that is very easy on the eye. For a charming addition, use a flower stencil to paint floral designs on the wall. Or cover pieces of furniture with a nature-inspired wallpaper like Burges Snail – Ocean.

Awake the senses with a pretty wallpaper design

Child's playroom with ‘Lovers' Toile – Blush’ on the upper wall and ‘Aquamarine – Mid’ on the lower wall with a pink bench and toys on the floor.
Wallpaper: Lovers’ Toile – Blush, Shelf - Light Peachblossom, Stripe – Bassoon, Panelling - Aquamarine – Mid, Bench/Baseboards – Blush

Wallpaper is always a wonderful choice for bedrooms, as it allows you to bring in an element of texture and add instant character. Consider incorporating wallpaper into your nursery scheme to soften any hard surfaces and create a restful sanctuary for your bundle of joy.

Lovers’ Toile is a classic bedroom wallpaper, based on a traditional Toile de Jouy. For a tranquil pairing, combine the soft Blush colourway with panelling in the mint green, Aquamarine – Mid. Use a curved panelling design and add a fun colour accent with the contrasting deep ochre, Bassoon.

Use tonal greens for a neutral, soothing scheme

Calm nursery space with a green (Green Stone - Pale) wardrobe on the left and a crib on the right with a side table and fluffy toys on the floor.
Wall - Green Stone - Pale, Wardrobe - Hopper, Crib - Book Room Green

If you want to keep things simple with a neutral colour scheme, choose shades of green for a calm, natural environment that will soothe your little one. Green is the true colour of nature, one that we feel comfortable with in the home. Its neutral makeup brings a sense of calm to many settings, including nurseries and kids’ rooms.

Use a green-based neutral such as Green Stone – Pale on the walls, and introduce stronger greens on the crib and furniture for a harmonious scheme. Consider elegant, muted greens like Book Room Green, or more vibrant, verdant hues like Hopper for a bold pop of colour.

Pair light blue and white for a calming nursery

Child's reading corner painted in white (Shirting) with pale blue (Bone China Blue) diagonal stripes with a book shelf on the wall and a stuffed giraffe, table and chair.
Wall – Shirting, Stripes - Bone China Blue, Baseboard - Middle Buff, Shelf Bars - Baked Cherry, Woad, Heat, Bone China Blue.

Pale blues are often associated with places of rest and calm, making them ideally suited to nursery settings.

For a more lively environment such as a toddler’s playroom, consider adding interest with contrasting colour and pattern. Paint diagonal stripes of Bone China Blue across a wall of the bright white, Shirting. Introduce a vibrant accent of Middle Buff on the baseboards, and paint furniture details in a selection of bright colours to create playful colour highlights.
